EYFS Overview

Curriculum

The curriculum is organised to provide the children with a variety of rich and imaginative experiences and is very responsive to the needs of all of the children. High expectations are established and maintained regarding teaching and learning and standards. Staff continue to promote a language rich and stimulating environment throughout the Early Years. We have a clear understanding of the differing needs of our children in the Early Years Foundation Stage. We have designed the curriculum to challenge, support and reflect the needs of our children. It is taught across the following areas of learning:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding of the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

At Corpus Christi Primary School, we provide a range of learning experiences through which children have opportunities to:

  • Play and explore
  • Be involved in active learning
  • Be creative and think critically

Reading

Phonics is taught through Pre-Phonic Skills in the two-year-old provision and Nursery. At Corpus Christi Primary School, we have adopted the Read Write Inc. (RWI) systematic phonics programme. This is a rigorous programme which ensures children in Reception quickly gain the phonics knowledge and early reading skills that they need. From week one of Reception, daily phonics sessions support children to hear the initial sounds of words, orally blend and then read words independently.

Outdoor Provision

Outdoor provision covers all areas of learning. Children are motivated through an excellent range of activities and a stimulating outdoor environment to help children achieve all aspects of the EYFS curriculum. It provides children with opportunities to explore the natural world and to connect with nature. Our EYFS Outdoor Classroom provides a range of learning spaces, including:

  • An outdoor mud kitchen and garden area
  • Opportunities for physical development (climbing, digging, den building, bike riding)
  • Large construction and large-scale model building
  • Small world area
  • Role play area
  • Sand and water play

Parent Partnership

Parent involvement is very important to our school and its community. We actively work with parents to ensure their child gets the best start in their education, making ourselves available to offer support and advice. Phonics workshops and stay and play sessions take place on a half-termly basis and provide meaningful opportunities for parents and staff to work in partnership and celebrate learning.

2 Year Olds – Welcome

Children receive an excellent start in the Early Years Foundation Stage. Our 2-year-old provision provides a safe, warm and nurturing learning space for our youngest children. We have places for 10 children in the morning session. It starts at 8:30 and finishes at 11:30. Our curriculum is carefully planned to ensure that all children thrive and achieve. In the 2-year-old provision we prioritise language development and children’s confidence. Through adult and child lead activities, high-quality interactions, songs, nursery rhymes and familiar routines, we aim to build children’s language and self-esteem, so that they develop into happy and curious young children.

Nursery – Welcome

The Nursery class is part of an enthusiastic foundation stage within Corpus Christi Primary School. Mrs Garland is our Nursery teacher and EYFS lead. We provide 30-hour places and have space for 26 children in each of the sessions, morning and afternoon. The morning session starts at 8:30 and finishes at 11:30 and the afternoon session starts at 12:15 and ends at 3:15pm.

Information

Pe sessions take place every Friday and children and parents are encouraged to change their book throughout the week by accessing our ‘Lending Library’.

Key Workers

The Nursery team provides and models caring and sensitive relationships with children. This reflects the school’s mission statement of ‘Love One Another as I have Loved You’. In nursery, each child will have their own keyworker, a person who holds a special relationship with them, makes them feel safe and ensures that their care is aimed to meet their individual needs. Through developing these trusting relationships, children quickly gain in confidence in the nursery environment.

Reception – Welcome

The Reception class is the final year of the Early Years Foundation Stage within Corpus Christi Primary School. Miss Daniel is our Reception teacher and Miss Wood is our teaching assistant. The school day begins between 8:45 and 8:55am and finishes at 3:05pm.

Transition

By the end of Reception our children are independent, curious and want to play and learn. They know and remember more and are able to make connections in their understanding. They are confident in new spaces and routines and ready for the transition to Year 1.
